I have searched the forms and I have been unable to have my question answered, so I decided to make a post.I am going for a police ride along with the local Police department that I want to apply to.I am wondering if I am able to bring a backpack with a note book, my wallet, keys etc. My slacks are fitted so I wouldn't be able to shove everything in my pockets like men are able too haha - even though I wouldn't be bringing much at all. Also, the dress code says 'business attire' so I will be wearing a nice gray dry fit polo and black slacks. However I was curious about the shoes - Would it look bad I wore nice black sneakers (completely black including the sole) to be comfortable? Or should I stick with the less comfortable option of dress shoes with heels. I live in Arizona where it will be a 110. day so no matter what being in the heat is always uncomfortable. I have read posts on this forum where officers have said 'wear comfortable shoes that are quiet'.

I want to make a good first impression, and I don't want something as silly as my shoes to become an issue.I do not know who the officer is that I will be riding with so I am unable to ask him/her. I just received my approval this morning and the only information it had was the date/time and dress code. Also open to any other suggestions you may have.Thank you in advance for your comments and advice.Crystal.

Usually I would carry my things in my purse. I can just pull out the few things I need I wasn't sure if I should bring a notebook or something as I've read in previous posts.

My slacks pockets are tiny and putting anything in them would be constricting. As a female I don't think I could get away with wearing loose slacks without looking sloppy.I am absolutely planning on buying them a meal if they allow me too.As far as the shoes are concerned I've never viewed sneakers as business casual. Which is why I asked, I would prefer to look professional as well as be comfortable on my feet. I wasn't sure if it would be frowned upon said like I said, sneakers aren't exactly business casual. Leave your stuff, including your cell phone, in your car or at the station if they allow it. Shove a credit card or small amount of cash in your pocket along with your ID and hand carry your keys and a water bottle. Wear a watch and a hair tie if you need it, and choose shoes that are comfortable.

Choose a shirt that can fit with a vest under it if they offer you one. Be prepared for a long, boring evening with an officer that may be uncomfortable with your presence until he/she feels safe with you around. Ask as many questions as you want, but at appropriate times.

Most of all, try to learn something. I agree with the other posts here. I am sure you will thoroughly enjoy your ride-along. However, the experience will most likely be limited as the officer may not be as proactive as he/she would be if no ride-along were present due to liability probabilities.

Depending on where the laptop computer is mounted in the car, there may be very little room for a backpack even on your lap.I don't think they will turn you away for wearing sneakers. They just don't want someone showing up wearing shorts and tank top and flipflops. If you don't get out of the vehicle, no one will know the difference, but if you do get out, by dressing as business casual, you won't stand out as too unusual. Plus, you may only ride for a limited amount of time, such as 4 hours or so.Don't wear perfume. The officer may be allergic to some fragrances, or it could just interfere with his/her smelling.Be prepared to hold onto a water bottle yourself, because there may not be room for a second bottle in a cup holder.Bring a smile.

Ride

Enjoy this opportunity. Ride alongs differ in many departments. On my department ride alongs can only go out with a supervisor and not with patrol officers.I've been a supervisor for over 15 years and have taken out quite a few ride alongs over that time. I guess I'm a little different from my colleagues above but they're also doing patrol work while I as a supervisor don't initiate it unless I have to. I encourage you to have a notebook and use it all you want, especially since you're trying to become an officer. Just don't let it get in the way so much as you don't know what's going on around you.If you were going out with me, I'd say bring the backpack, just put it in the trunk and not in the front seat.

That's the type of stuff that goes in the trunk. Your cellphone should be kept in the backpack so it doesn't go off at the wrong time on calls.

Also, I suggest wearing dark clothing, especially if you're working at night. There's a reason most departments' uniforms are dark in color.I encourage lots of questions as that's the best way to learn stuff but again, I'm a supervisor and not a lone patrol officer.

Hopefully the person you ride with will provide you with some 'ground rules' before you leave the station, that way you'll know what they expect of you. Learn stuff and have fun!
